Cycle of Days - Original Abstract Painting by Contemporary Texas Artist Filomena Booth

Cycle of Days
24"x30"x.75"
Acrylic on canvas

Have I mentioned before that I love to play around with texture and a variety of techniques?  I'm sure I have!

I started this painting by texturing the canvas heavily with gesso.  I slathered it on, leaving hills and valleys and allowed it to dry.  Many layers of thin glazes of transparent acrylic, iridescent gold, thin washes of gesso and runs of water all created depth and a moody patina.

Cycle of Days is currently available through Artfulhome.  Please contact me for more information.

Transformations...painting in progress

Occasionally I like to take pictures of my work as it evolves on the easel.  I don't always know where I'm going when I start, but I usually know when I get there.

Here is the canvas with a few guide lines establishing the structure, composition of the painting and some preliminary color.  At this point, I'm not too worried about the colors I'm using.

A little more paint and the composition begins to emerge.

I decided to add bolder color...some hot pink and yellow orange.

More color and more glazes.

At this point I was begining to think that I was almost finished but this is where I needed a second opinion.  I asked my critic, my husband, what he thought.  He confirmed my feeling that it needed something more.

I decided to tie the whole thing together with a thin glaze of Quinacridone Gold mixed with a little Raw Umber.  Before the glaze began to set, I wiped out circles, exposing the underlying colors.

Here is the finished piece:

Light Elements - Original Abstract Modern Art Contemporary Acrylic Painting by Filomena de Andrade Booth

Light Elements
30"x24"x.75"
Acrylic on Canvas

I completed this painting this past weekend.  It is based on a design I did a while back that was intended to depict light shining through a stained glass window.  It also reminds me of light shining through tree branches.  I've done several of these and all have sold except for the two most recent paintings.

The Day After - Abstract Painting on Yupo by Texas Contemporary Abstract Artist Filomena Booth

The Day After
Matted - 20"x16"
Acrylic on Yupo
$100.00
$10.00 s/h

Every once in a while I like to root around in my studio closet just to see what I have stashed away since we moved here.  I found this painting I did on Yupo a couple of years ago.  If you haven't tried working on this fun material, you should. It is a synthetic (plastic) material that allows the paint to slide around on the surface, creating all sorts of interesting forms.  It was originally created as a tough, durable material for the graphic arts industry and was manufactored in a variety of thicknesses.  Somehow, a starving artist somewhere decided to try it out and suddenly discovered it made a fun surface to paint on.  Or, maybe he just had some packing material laying around the studio and accidentally dripped paint on it,  who knows, either way it's an interesting discovery.

Click here for a demonstration on how to paint on Yupo.

The painting is matted and ready to frame.  Frame is not included.
