Collage #001 - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Collage #001
Matted - 12"x12"
Art size - 6"x6"

Over the years I have collected boxes and boxes of beautiful hand made rice papers, painted papers and all sorts of other paper ephemera.  I hate to throw anything out that I think I can use in one of my paintings.

Here is the first in a series of mini-collages that I've been working on recently.  They are all matted, mounted on foam board and ready to be framed.

Ground Swell - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Ground Swell
36"x36"x1.5"
Acrylic/Mixed on Canvas

I painted this piece a couple of years ago.  Although the composition is a simple one, this painting has several complex elements that add to the overall design.  A palette knife was used to apply red and black paint in the center of the painting.  I also applied metallic gold leaf to draw the eye into the painting.  The background is an interesting experiment I did with diluted gesso and alcohol on a sand colored base.  The black, red and blue hard edge band in the lower part of the painting are a contrast to the overall free-flowing design of this work.  It doesn't show well in this image, but the red band has a "ribbed" textural pattern and the black band has been finished in glossy acrylic varnish.

Breaking the Rules - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Breaking the Rules
24"x30"x1.5"
Acrylic/mixed media on canvas

Whenever I have a painting that's been sitting around gathering dust, I usually just gesso over the painted canvas and start all over again. Layers of paint and built up medium add to the texture of the new painting and make it more interesting than if it were on an absolutely pristine canvas.  So, my advice, for what it's worth, is to not be afraid of painting over an old painting.  No sense having it sit in the corner not being of use to anyone, and who knows, the next one might be the masterpiece you've been waiting for.

Bright New Day - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Bright New Day
Acrylic on canvas
40" x 30" x 1.5"

I painted this work in 2011 shortly after my mom had passed away.  I had been away from the studio for quite a while and needed to do something different to express my feelings at the time.  I felt that I needed a new start and decided to work in a totally different way than I normally do.

I began this painting by pouring Golden Fluid acrylics on to the canvas and using a rubber brayer to blend the colors.  Saran wrap and bubble wrap placed over the wet color created interesting patterns on the canvas.  It was a good beginning to get me back to painting again.

The painting is available through my website.

A Quiet Moment - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

A Quiet Moment
40" x 40" x 1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

I've had this painting in my inventory for about a year and a half.  Occasionally I will go through paintings that still live here at home, and if I decide that they need to be reincarnated, I will gesso and paint over the canvas.  I've had this painting hanging in one of our guest rooms and love the calming, soothing feeling that it seems to create in the room.  The colors are soft and very subtle but the canvas is rough and heavily textured, an interesting juxtaposition.

I hope you enjoy this video I made to show some close-up details in this work.

Details, Details... - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

I put together a video of my latest painting, "Opposing Forces" and thought you might like to see some of the close-up details.

Hope you enjoy it!

I plan to start working on a new canvas tomorrow and will take some pictures as I go along.  I've gotten many comments from other artists who enjoyed watching the development of this painting...stay tuned.

Opposing Forces - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Opposing Forces
36"x40"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

In my last post I chronicled the journey of  my painting process.  The painting was a failure, at least I was not happy with it.  Thankfully, I don't give up easily, so I applied a heavy coat of gesso to the canvas and scraped through the wet gesso to create even more texture.

When the canvas was dry, I started layering more paint and scrubbing out areas to reveal the underlying layers of color.  Finally, after several hours of work, I was finally satisfied with the result.

Thank you for all the encouraging comments while I wrestled with this painting.  This process is something that we artists deal with every day.  Some days everything just seems to fall into place, but other days you feel like tearing your hair out.  But, I feel that every struggle results in learning new lessons.  And, as they say, when you stop learning, you're dead!

In Progress -Days 6-8 - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

If you're following my progress with this painting, you'll notice that I painted over the previous day's work.  I decided that it was a bit too bland and needed a punch of bright red...ok, so far so good.
Now I continued to break up the larger spaces with more color and line.  At this point, I stopped painting and was satisfied with my progress.  My good friend, who is also an artist, said that she saw a horse in the painting.  I thought that since this is intuitive painting, then this must be the direction the painting wanted to go.

I'll spare you the "horse".

I continued to paint and suddenly discovered
that the painting wanted to be a garden of roses, so I went with that for a while....
So, I continued working in the "rose garden" and when I stepped away, I hated it.

Tomorrow I'll post the rest of this journey, stay tuned.

Day 5 - In Progress - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Day 5

I'm still adding more glazed layers of color.  I decided to lighten some areas by adding white to the glazed but may deepen some of the colors as I go along.  This painting is a journey and I never really know what lies around the corner.  Stay with me as I continue to develop this painting.

Day 4 - In Progress - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Day 4

More color glazes help build up texture and allow the underpainting to show through.  As I study the painting, I can see that I still have a long way to go.  I really like areas of the painting but have to continue to experiment with adding and subtracting to pull everything together.

Day 5 coming up.

Day 3 - In Progress - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Day 3

In this picture, you can see that I've started breaking up the large areas with more glazes that I made by mixing the colors with my mixture of slow-dry medium, clear mixing glaze and gloss medium.  Before each layer drys completely, I continued to splash water and wipe out the color to expose underlying color and texture.  I also added more line work with the black crayon and did a little scraping with a palette knife.

Day 4 coming up next...stay tuned.

Day 2 - In Progress - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Day 2

This is the result of the second day's work on this painting. I started by laying in color over the original "gridwork" of day 1.  I used a mix of gloss medium, slow-dry medium and clear mixing glaze to create glazes of color and to help slow down the quick drying acrylics.  I also sprayed water on the still wet acrylic to help blend the colors.  In some areas, I wiped out color, exposing underlying color and marks from day 1.  As I worked, I continued to make more markings on the canvas with the black crayon.

The beauty of painting like this is that everything is a discovery and I never know where I'll end up.

Stay tuned for Day 3
