Artists are hoarders too...

In my studio, I have several bins filled with materials I've collected over the years.  Pieces of lace, rice papers, old postal stamps, stencils, etc. may eventually find their way into one of my paintings.  Sometimes as I contemplate what to do with a canvas, I might rummage through one of these bins to look for something that might be incorporated into a new work.  I don't consider myself a hoarder by any means, but when it comes to art materials, well, that's a different story!

Born to teach...

I believe that each of us have certain skills that we are born with but that we have to discover as we grow up.  I know that as much as I love music, singing is not something I was ever cut out to do.  I would have loved to be a scientist or mathematician, but I stink at arithmetic.

Ever since I can remember, I loved to play "school".  And of course, being the oldest, I always got to be the teacher while my little sister had to endure my "lessons".   Years later, my desire to teach became reality when I was hired as a high school art teacher in Wayne, NJ.  I enjoyed every moment of teaching at that school.  I discovered that students who were bored with the classes they were assigned to seemed to blossom when they came to art class.  Sometimes my regular classes would be filled with kids who asked for passes out of study hall to come to my class to work on their projects.  Today, thanks to Facebook, I have reconnected with former students.  Many of them are now almost at retirement age...yikes, am I that old???  Anyway, one of the nicest compliments I've ever gotten was from a couple of ladies who became art teachers because of me.  Wow, I was so humbled by their comments and I can't imagine a greater privilege than inspiring another human being in a positive way!

I love teaching my painting workshops but I don't enjoy packing everything up and traveling around the country.  So, that is why I am offering my workshops close to my home in Inverness, Florida.  This is an especially beautiful part of Florida's west coast...we call it the Nature Coast.  When you visit this area, you'll understand why.

Mesa
20"x20"x1.5"
Acrylic on textured canvas
SOLD

I was in college when artist acrylic paints first came out.  I was working in oils at the time but hated how long they took to dry.  Many times our canvases would get ruined when fellow students were careless in storing the canvases for the next class.  So, I was pretty excited about the new products and was anxious to give them a try.  Well, surprise surprise!  The new acrylics were simply awful!  I remember trying to mix some colors together on my palette when suddenly everything turned into a totally useless gooey purple ball

Thank goodness things have come a long way!  We have an enormous assortment of colors and mediums available to use today that make it easy for the acrylic painter.  But, I've discovered that many of my students still don't know how to properly dispose of their dirty rinse water.  I too was just pouring it down the drain until we bought a home with a septic system.  It occurred to me that dumping that nasty stuff was not such a great idea.  I did a little research online and found that there is a right way to get rid of rinse water, and it does not involve sand!  I've streamlined the information I found online and it is one of the first things I teach my workshop students.

Serenade to Spring
44"x30"x1.5"
Acrylic on heavily texture canvas
SOLD

Do you have paintings sitting around that are just taking up space?  Yes, maybe there was something special about it a couple of years ago and that's the reason you kept it around.  But now your style has changed as you've perfected your craft and it's time to take another look at that "oldie".  Well, the question now is whether you should continue to hang on the that dust collector or get rid of it.

I don't believe in wasting anything, so when a painting has worn out its welcome, I take a deep breath and drag out my bucket of gesso.  Once that first paint stroke is on the canvas, there's no going back!

This painting, Serenade to Spring, was a do-over.  I forget what I painted over, but the rich texture that was on the surface of the canvas became the base for the new painting.  Amazingly enough, once I posted the "new" painting, it sold immediately.  So, take a look around your studio, is there something that's been sitting around for a while that needs to be reincarnated?  If so, recycle and save yourself a few bucks!

To gesso or not to gesso, that is the question!

One of the things I love to do before I even begin a painting, is to texture the canvas.  You should always prime your canvas before painting.  Priming, or gessoing, the canvas helps seal the canvas and provides a barrier between the paint and canvas fabric.  I like that it also helps to hide the weave pattern of the canvas.  Some acrylic gessos are heavier in body than others.  I like to use Golden  and many artists love Utrecht gesso.  Liquitex is good also but is more "liquidy" than others.  To create a thicker, richer surface to paint on, I frequently mix molding paste in with the gesso.  This is just one of the tips I teach my students in my workshops on the very first day.  Everyone has fun playing with the texture and can't wait to start painting as soon as the surface of the canvas is dry!

Dusk
20"x20"x1.5"
Acrylic on canvas

I love the freedom of painting abstractly and following my intuition as I paint.  Allowing the paint to guide and lead me in new directions that I never intended is exciting to me.

This painting sold a couple of years ago and although I've tried to "copy" it, I have never been able to duplicate it exactly.

If  you'd like to discover how to follow your muse into uncharted territories, join me for a 3 day private abstract painting workshop.  I supply all you need, even lunch, and you will go home with 2-3 brand new paintings and an arsenal of new ideas and techniques. Included in this intense, but fun, workshop are tips on selling your art online!

Just bring your enthusiasm!
