Morning Sun - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Morning Sun
30"x30"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

Here are some "in progress" shots of this painting.

I textured the canvas heavily with modeling paste before washing in the color.  To create movement and a composition, I "drew" in line work with black paint.  At this point, the painting began to suggest plant forms blowing in the wind.  I blocked in more color and obliterated areas with gesso.  As the painting developed, I started to define the forms with heavier layers of paint.

I enjoy experimenting with textures and watching the painting develop as I play with the various elements until I'm finally satisfied with the result.

Back to Basics - Original Abstract Mixed-media painting by Texas Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Back to Basics
24"x24"x1.5"
Mixed-media on canvas

Once in a while it's fun to look around the studio to find things to include or to hide in a painting.  Several years ago I had cast some shapes out of PermaStone.  As I was rummaging through my cabinet of odds and ends, I came across a couple of pieces that I thought would be fun to include in the painting.  I also added clear tar gel, crackle paste, heavy gloss gel, oil pastel and a few collage pieces that I cut from a magazine.  As I slowly started to build up the texture and layering the paint, I also started subtracting out some areas to reveal the coats of underlying color.  Diluted gesso helped to "veil" areas that I thought were too dominant and I used glazes of transparent color to eventually bring the painting to completion.

Dancing in the Light - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Artist Filomena Booth

Dancing in the Light
30"x24"x1.5"
Acrylic on canvas

It took me a while to think of a good title for this abstract painting.  After a great deal of thought, the playful composition reminded me of dancing.  The soft pastel colors are contrasted with the bright reds, purple and blues on the heavily textured canvas.  The canvas is stretched over 1.5" deep heavy duty bars and is ready to hang as soon as it arrives.  The painting continues around the sides so that framing is not needed.

YUPO and where the heck does the time go? Filomena de Andrade Booth

Acrylic on YUPO

It's been a long time since I posted anything on my blog, and I didn't want you to think that I had somehow fallen off the planet.  Visits from family, normal every-day obligations and probably some laziness has played a part in keeping me away from contributing anything new to this blog.  Spring is also here and all those chores associated with getting the gardens ready have also played a huge role in my absence.

Anyway, while looking through my files, I came across some paintings that I had done on YUPO a while back.  If you have never tried this amazing product, I hope you will some day.  YUPO is actually a synthetic plastic material that was originally used to make tough, tear-proof labels.  I suppose some poor artist accidentally dumped his watercolors on packing material he had laying around in the studio and discovered the amazing properties of YUPO.  Because the paint isn't absorbed into the material, it can dance around on the surface, drying in interesting puddles and shapes.  Many artists work in watercolor but I prefer fluid acrylics, which stained the material permanently and can't be manipulated when dry.

Prelude to Spring - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Prelude to Spring
36"x36"x1.5'
Acrylic on Canvas

This is a commissioned painting I just completed for a client.  The colors are very soft and muted on a very textured canvas.  I started out by using a palette knife to apply the paint on the canvas and finished by applying glazes of color to create a softer look.  I "washed" the pink in the middle of the painting and did a little spraying with water to create some texture.  Overall, I'm very pleased with this painting and hope the client will too.

Rays of Light - in progress

I started this painting several days ago and, in between a series of interruptions, was able to finish it today.  The canvas was heavily textured with a variety of mediums as well as a failed painting that I gessoed over.  I always like to start with some sort of line work to help me establish the composition.  Whether I decide to stick to that, is anybody's guess.

I continued to apply glazes of color to the canvas.  It's hard to see in these shots, but there are a lot of subtle variations in the color and depth of the tones.

I think it's finished.  Tomorrow I'll try to
take better pictures, if it's not so miserably
cold outside!

What Goes Around...by Texas Contemporary Abstract Artist Filomena Booth

What Goes Around...
40"x40"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

Sometimes it's nice to try something completely different for a change.  My compositions are generally more geometric, based on rectangles and squares.  Last week, after texturing the canvas, I decided to begin the painting with large, sweeping shapes.  Lots more texturing and metallic touches later and this spiral emerged.  I wish the sunlight outside had been brighter when I took this picture...there is no beige in the painting.  I finagled the best I could with Photoshop, but couldn't get the pale sage green quite right.  I'll try again on a sunnier day.

This painting has not yet been posted on either one of my online art gallery sites, ArtQuiver and Artfulhome.  For purchase information, please contact me.

At First Glance
40"x40"x1.5"
Sold

Just when I thought that 2011 would get off to a slow start, I got an email from ArtQuiver to inform me that one of my paintings had just sold.  That made my day and gave me the motivation to get busy in the studio again after taking a too long break for the Holidays.

Hopefully 2011 will be a great one for us artists.  Please comment if you've noticed an up-tick in sales and interest in your work.
