Morning Rain by Filomena de Andrade Booth Texas Contemporary Abstract Artist

Morning Rain

Obviously the title of this painting describes the kind of day it was when this painting was created.  Choosing the right title for a piece of art is almost as difficult as choosing the name of a child.  I find that there are times when it will take me longer to come up with a good title than it does to paint the actual painting.  But, calling it "Untitled" just doesn't seem right.
Especially with an abstract painting, when the subject is not obvious, a title helps guide the viewer to the artist's intent in creating the work in the first place.

Just wondering how my artist friend come up with good titles for their paintings.  Your comments are certainly appreciated.

Keeping Watch - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Keeping Watch
10"x10"x1.5"
Mixed media on canvas

I love building up texture in my work.  In this particular piece, I "recycled" an old painting by adding collage and 3-dimensional plaster pieces that I cast with Hydrostone.  Once everything was securely glued in place with gel medium, I gessoed the entire canvas and started painting, stenciling, etc...anything to create an interesting surface.

Primavera Overture - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Primavera Overture
30"x30"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

We've had an unusually warm winter this year here in Central Texas and spring feels like it's about to make its debut.  As I look out my studio window and see the grasses starting to come up, along with a lot of weeds, I can't help thinking that it's time to get the garden going again.  I just hope we don't have a repeat of the record breaking heat and drought of last summer.  Hopefully all the rain we've had this winter will bring a beautiful crop of Texas wildflowers.

Between the Lines by Filomena de Andrade Booth Texas Contemporary Abstract Artist

Between the Lines
40"x36"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

This is my first painting of the new year and I'm excited to finally be getting back into the studio.  I started this painting on a recycled canvas, that is, an old painting that was gessoed over and made "new" again.  I like the hints of color and texture that show through under the coat of gesso.  Somehow that helps to establish the direction of a new painting.

As this painting developed, I started to make stronger definitions with various shades of white but always making sure to allow the under-painted colors to show through.  Although it may not show in this picture, this painting is actually very colorful, almost playful, with lots of rhythmic movement to move the eye across the canvas.

Please contact me for more information about this painting.

Meandering - by Filomena Booth Texas Contemporary Abstract Artist

Meandering
30"x30"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

I completed this painting last summer, and as I was going through my files this afternoon, I decided to take a closer look at this particular piece.  It's a bit different from my more structured paintings in that it is loose and flowing.  It has a playful, almost lyrical quality that I think I need to tap into more often.

It's good to go back and look at some older works and try to find a new direction from time to time.
