I love working over paintings I've had around for a while. The original painting had some texture on the canvas but I decided to add a mixture of gesso and modeling paste. I swirled it on with a big brush and left it to dry overnight. As I started to do the underpainting, the diluted color settles into the textured surface, adding depth. Metallic gold paint adds a unique dimension to the painting, giving it an "antiqued" glow and draws the eye into the painting.

I never worried too much about dumping my dirty acrylic rinse water down the drain until we purchased a home with a septic system. I asked our septic guy if it was safe to discard it down the drain and he wasn't sure that would be a very good idea. I did some searching online and came across some methods that involve allowing the water to evaporate and then straining the sludge through a nylon stocking. That would never work for me! I paint often and use lots of water...it would take forever to evaporate, not to mention all the buckets sitting around in my studio. Other methods involve pouring the water into a bucketful of sand and letting it evaporate.

Again, not a useful idea for me.

I found that Golden Paints has the very best, ecologically friendly solution for waste water disposal.

I don't use the PH test papers anymore, because I have learned that 1 tablespoon of the Hydrated Lime and Aluminum Sulfate is enough to clear a big Lowes bucketful of waste water. It's amazing to watch the sediments coagulate and settle to the bottom of the bucket and the clean water rise to the top...almost like magic! After straining the sediment through the 12 cup coffee filters, I pour out the clean water on a plant that lives outside my studio door. I think it likes the extra boost of fertilizer!

The Best Paint Palette for Acrylics

It's taken me many years to find the perfect palette for acrylic paints, and believe me, I think I've tried them all. I like to be able to have enough space to mix my colors, so small palettes do not work for me. I like to store my left over paints in a sealed stay-wet palette, but even that is too small to allow me enough room to "play". Finally, after trying out different ideas, I decided to order a 24" x 30" plate glass sheet. It works wonderfully with my acrylics, it's easy to clean and allows me plenty of space to keep my colors from intermixing, unless I want them to. I placed a sheet of white paper under the glass to allow me to see the colors correctly. I also like to spray water on the the paints to prevent them from drying out too fast. Cleaning the glass is actually fun! When I'm finished painting, I scoop up the clean paints and store them in my stay-wet palette. After letting the paints on the palette dry out, usually overnight, I spray it with water and use a paint scraper to peel up the "skins". Some artists like to use the skins in their work...I don't.

Whatever you do, don't use a piece of plexi as a paint palette with acrylics!

Acrylics are plastic and stick to plastic like glue!
