Here is another palette-knife painting I sold last year.  There's something about the directness of using a knife that is very appealing.  A brush is not the only way to apply paint to canvas.  Anything from sponges to fingers can produce interesting effects that are not possible with the traditional brush.  And, it's a lot of fun too!

I recently completed this heavily textured painting by applying several coats of gesso and acrylic gels. Before the layers were dry, I scraped and scratched into the surface with a variety of tools. After blending the colors with heavy gloss gel, I applied the paint with palette knives, brushes and sponges. The sculptural quality of the painting invites the viewer to touch the surface of the canvas.

This is my latest painting.  It is heavily textured with thick layers of color that were applied with a large palette knife.  The problem with working with acrylics on a large canvas is that the paint sets up pretty fast and makes blending nearly impossible.  As I applied the paint, mixed with a variety of mediums, I used my hands and fingers to blend the paint directly on the canvas.  Sometimes the best tools are right at "hand".

I've been working on getting the red in this painting as close to the actual painting for the last couple of days and this is about as close as I can get.  The image is a bit more "orangy" than the cadmium red that is in the painting.  I adjusted the white balance, used a polarizing filter to cut glare, photographed indoors with lights, photographed out doors without, and so it went.  Reds are hard to to get right!!

Tuscan Landscape grouping

I just completed a series of small heavily textured acrylic palette knife mixed media paintings on canvas.  Each painting measures 10"x10"x1.5".  The movie, Under the Tuscan Sun, was the inspiration for the series.  Although I've never traveled to Italy, I tried to capture the warmth of the sun and feeling of the countryside.  The paintings are accented with collaged elements...postage stamps, archetectural images and a variety of decorative papers.

This is my latest adventure into painting with a palette knife.  I'm enjoying the process although painting with acrylics can be tricky because of the short drying time.  Even with the heavy texture, blending is difficult but I'm happy with the result.

I decided to try something a little different for a change. After mixing my colors on my palette, I added heavy matte gel to give the paint more body and started to apply the impasto to the canvas with a palette knife. The thick paint didn't dry as fast and allowed me to do some mixing on the canvas...which was nice. Over all, I'm pretty pleased with this painting.
