Although this painting is titled " A Quiet Moment", my studio was far from quiet on the day I completed this work.  I like to have music in the background as I paint and I find that the rhythm translates itself to the canvas.  I don't remember exactly what was playing that day, but I'm pretty sure that it was something that inspired the swirling movement of color.

This painting was sold recently and it got me to thinking how much I enjoyed working on it.  It's quite different from the work I usually do, non-objective abstracts.  A couple of days ago I started a large 36"x36" abstract but decided to change course completely.  If you go back to one of my previous posts, you'll see the painting in progress.  Well, I hope to have it finished in a day or two.  It'll be a complete surprise and I'm sure having fun with it.

A few years ago, my son and daughter-in-law asked me to paint something for their new home.  Their colors were coral and a vibrant golden yellow.  They need something large for the family room, so I decided to use three canvases and paint them all together.  This is one painting that came together quickly and with very little of the struggle that sometimes happens when working on a commission.   I really enjoyed working on this particular painting and was very happy with the result.  And, most importantly, the kids loved the painting too!

Morning Mist

I recently bought several small cradled panels at Michaels.  They were on sale and I was excited about creating something on a different surface for a change.  This is the second set of small paintings I've done on these panels.

I love the smooth surface of the panels but decided to apply a heavy textured coat of molding paste to give me lots of "hills and valleys" to experiment with.  I like the way light plays across the uneven surfaces.  Layer upon layer of thin glazes allowed me to build up the colors as well as reveal the tones in the underlying layers.

Work in Progress - Original Abstract Acrylic Modern Art Contemporary Painting by Filomena de Andrade Texas Contemporary Artist

This is what I'm starting out with this morning.  I spent most of yesterday getting these four panels ready.  I had them sitting in the studio for about a year.  They had been primed and textured, so they were ready to go.  

I began by laying in color to establish some sort of composition.  I like to layer colors and then partly wash them away, exposing the layers beneath.  Adding glazes of color also increases the depth and enhances the texture that is on the surface.

It's been another one of those weeks.  A doctor's appointment on Monday, hairdresser on Tuesday and I forget what else I had to do yesterday, but it took me away from home.  I thought that since I'm out here in the country and have my own studio, that I'd have all the time in the world to create.  Well, it doesn't always turn out that way.

But, today is a new day and although the sun isn't shining this morning, I've been looking forward to sunrise and an early start in the studio.  I have two big canvases stretched and ready to go, so there are no excuses today.

This is one of the four paintings that I'm shipping to First Avenue Contemporary Gallery in Ketchum, Idaho.  

Shipping art to galleries that are out of state and far from my home has been an entirely new experience for me.  I decided to have a professional packing and shipping company handle the details, just to make sure that everything arrives in one piece.  I don't want to take a chance on having my work arrive at the gallery damaged.  Unfortunately, even with carefully packed work, some companies manhandle the packages and cause extensive damage that can never be repaired.

What have your experiences been like when you ship your work to galleries?  Have you had nightmare scenarios trying to collect on a claim?

Sometimes it's amazing how much we can accomplish once we put our minds to it.  I had stretched and prepped three large canvases a couple of days ago.  So, yesterday I had no excuses not to buckle down and paint in the studio.  With soft music in the background, I tackled this large white expanse and just started to paint.  As I continued, it began to evolve and eventually "speak" for itself.  It's a little hard to see the subtle color blending in this image but I was very pleased with the final result.  By the time "Totem" announced that it was finished, it was 3:00 in the afternoon and I had actually forgotten to eat lunch.  I need to have that happen more often!!
